Founded in 1579, Vilnius University is one of Europe’s oldest and most distinguished institutions, consistently ranked as Lithuania’s top university. Located in the heart of Vilnius Old Town, it is both an academic center and a breathtaking architectural landmark. Its architectural ensemble, shaped over nearly 500 years, blends Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical styles, reflecting Lithuania’s rich cultural heritage. The complex includes 13 historic courtyards, each with its own unique character.
At its core stands the Church of St. Johns with its iconic 68-meter bell tower, offering breathtaking panoramic city views. The church, dating back to the 14th century, features a magnificent Baroque interior by architect Johann Christoph Glaubitz and houses Lithuania’s largest altar and a grand pipe organ. It also serves as the venue for Vilnius University’s graduation ceremonies.
Vilnius University has been a crossroads of ideas since the Renaissance, shaping European thought through the Reformation and beyond. Its motto, Hinc itur ad astra, inscribed on the Observatory wall, reflects its enduring commitment to knowledge, discovery, and innovation.
Today, the university remains a leading center for research and education, with its linguistics programs ranked among the world’s top 201–250 (QS World University Rankings by Subject). Home to the Faculties of History, Philology, and Philosophy, as well as the University Library and Museum, it preserves the legacy of scholars who shaped Lithuania’s cultural and scientific landscape.
